On Thursday 20th October 2022, Makerere University Department of Journalism and Communication (MAKDJC) hosted Journalism and Communication practitioners, Makerere University academic staff to a momentous occasion to launch two new Masters Graduate Courses.

The launch, held at Makerere University Senate building was graced by the first cohort of the Masters in Strategic & Corporal Communication students with key note speeches from Ms. Gloria Sebikari and Dr. George William Lugalambi.

Dr. Aisha Nakiwala, the Head of MAKDJC thanked everyone for attending the launch that had taken delicate steps of approval and accreditation. She spoke with pleasure the capacity the Department has to undertake these 2 new courses with 13 PHD holders among the department staff.

Dr.Saudah Namyalo, Dean-School of Languages, Literature & Communication hailed the progress the Department had made with the addition of the 2 new Masters courses. She pledged full support in transforming the Department into a School of Journalism and Communication given the vast experience of the staff and progress made over the years.

Prof. Patrick Mangeni, the Principle College of Humanities & Sciences thanked the MAKDJC staff for their commitment to ensure students graduate within scheduled time. “Universities outside complete these courses in 1year and there is no reason why we shouldn’t do the same” – Prof. Patrick Mangeni

Keynote address from Ms. Gloria Sebikari

Ms. Gloria Sebikari the Manager, Corporate Affairs, Petroleum Authority of Uganda emphasized the importance of communication being strategic. “For communication to be strategic, it must always be linked to the mission and goals of the organization or to the aspirations of the country” Gloria Sebikari.

Keynote address from Dr. George William Lugalambi

Dr. George William Lugalambi, the Executive Director African Centre for Media Excellence began his remarks by recognizing how technology has impacted the way journalism is practiced today. It’s upon this basis  that he stated that the Department has rightfully launched the appropriate Masters course in multimedia journalism to ensure that whoever goes through the program can create multimedia content using the available technology and tools today.
